About the Artist

Charles has been working in the sculpture business since the mid '70's when he taught at the Johnson Atelier and Tech School of Sculpture in New Jersey.

"My goal as an artist is to create highly representational depictions of pleasurable sights and sensations.  I try to find things that interest me.  It may be a person or it may be an activity.  They are usually commonplace, such as my wife sitting quietly, or a neighbor trying to ice skate; those intimate, informal or private moments rather than the standard ceremonial poses.

These figures may not be doing anything significant with their bodies, but confront the beholder as a powerful human presence with a vitality of their own. Even though I sculpt realistically, many times a gesture works better than a tight representation.  I like to see the clay's smudge, scrape marks and texture.  It is exciting to take clay, which comes from the earth, and make it into an image of something living, a figure with presence, and then bring it to bronze which will last for generations."
